Pioneer Camp is the most relaxing lodge around Lusaka. Only 14 kms (20 mins drive) from the airport or shopping centers of Arcades and Manda Hill, Pioneer Camp is the last oasis stopover on the way to South Luangwa and Malawi. We offer 14 individual, thatched chalets and a beautiful 2 bedroomed cottage each set within 25 acres of Miombo woodland. The chalets range from simple stylish comfort to the highest levels of luxury expected at any top safari lodge. All en suite chalets have verandas with lovely woodland views and are very private, just a minutes walk from the main camp. At the centre of the Pioneer camp is the open thatched bar and restaurant or 'Chitenge'. This is for residents' only and is open from 0700 until 2300 everyday. Pioneer Camp is well known for the candle lit BBQ meals served in the evenings - in particular the tasty 500g T-ones! There is a recreation area with swimming pool, table tennis, and billiards as well as a library of informative books of wildlife, fauna and flora and holiday novels. The campsite and simple chalets share charcoal - heated showers (hot water at all times) . The whole area is surrounded by an unobtrusive electric fence to ensure complete security. |

At the centre of the Pioneer Camp is the open thatched bar/restaurant or 'Chitenge'. This is for residents only and is open from 0700 until 2300 every day. Coffee and Tea are always available here but, along with drinks from the bar, can be brought to your chalet if requested. Hosted mainly by Alfred, this is the place to exchange tales of adventure with fellow travellers. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served here. Pioneer Camp is well known for the candle lit braai meals served in the evenings - in particular the tasty 500gm T-bones!
There is a recreation area with swimming pool, pool table, billiards etc. A library of informative books about the wildlife, fauna and flora of Zambia alone with books about other parts of Africa and holiday novels.

The Safari Chalets with their private bathrooms and terraces are a minutes walk from the Main Camp offer a high level of privacy and face out to offer a beautiful view of the Zambian countryside. Day 1 After arrival from your international flight the meet and greet service of the local charter airline will assist you through customs and hand over the tickets for your ongoing flights.
A short 1 ½ hours flight will take you to Mfuwe - the gateway to South Luangwa National park. In Mfuwe you have a car transfer of approx. 45 min. to Kafunta River Lodge, where you have the chance to go on your first afternoon game drive.
Kafunta River Lodge is set in riverside forest on the banks of the Luangwa River, overlooking the South Luangwa National Park. This classical Safari Lodge offers all the creature comforts in a wildlife environment, the high standard of personalized service provides attention to the finest of details.
The 8 private chalets are built on raised wooden platforms under a thatched roof, the mahogany floors and walls give a natural beauty to the luxurious interiors.
Day 2 - 3 Enjoy your day filled with exciting game spotting during day and night drives, relax at the pool and enjoy dinner on an open wooden patio overlooking the river.
Day 3 - 6 in the morning you start for your transfer to Luambe National Park a respectively small park but with a high diversity of landscape and rich on nocturnal cats. The scenic drive in an open 4x4 vehicle leads you through typical African bushland, steep rivers and mopane forests. You will pass a few Zambian villages on the way on you approx. 3 to 4 hours drive. (Alternatively a charter-flight in a Cessna can be booked)
For the next 3 nights you are a guest at Luangwa Wilderness Lodge hosted by trained biologists. This lodge in the middle of a National Park at the eastern banks of the Luambe river towards the northern end of the park and allows the sight of elephants on the opposite river bank.
Towards October hundreds of hippos are splashing in the water.
On game drives night or day your vehicle will be the only one in the whole park. This is deep Africa in its purest form.
Day 6 - 7 After early morning tea you will have a short transfer of approx. 30 min, to a near-by airstrip . A small Cessna will take you back to Mfuwe were you have another night at Kafunta River Lodge before you board your regular charter flight to Lusaka next morning.
Day 7 - 8 In Lusaka you will be accommodated at Pioneer Lodge, a family run lodge set in quiet bush and farmland about 14km (20 mins) from the Airport and City. This quiet, secure and well-run place is the perfect final stop over to reflect quietly on the wonderful experiences of the last few days or to exchange adventuous tales with fellow travellers.
The smart 'safari' chalets, a short distance from the main camp, have private bathrooms and are individually designed with African style fittings.
You can walk around the property which is surprisingly good for birds or make use of the pool. Transfers to Lusaka or a near-by shopping centre can be offered on request.
Day 8 After an early breakfast transfer to Lusaka International Airport for departure. In case of late arrival (SAA) you will spend your first night at Pioneer and connect directly to your departure flight on your last day. |
