Barong Cottage

Singa (a winged lion in Hindu mythology) in the shower room, and the Barong (a strange, fun-loving creature in the shape of a shaggy semi-lion, representing the good spirit in Hindu mythology) bathtub set the mood of the Barong Room. The stone carved Singa was handpicked from the wares of forty stores in a famous stone-carving village called Negari near Ubud. Hot water will spout from the Singa's mouth. The Barong was hand-carved on site. The whole bathing area is located in an outdoor garden, which gives you a feeling of breathing with the Universe while bathing. The interior decoration is traditional Balinese style. The bedcover and curtains are the best found at the most famous cloth street called Sulawesi in Bali.

Primitive Room

The primitive room is located in the most tranquil corner of Matahari, its two windows facing a tropical jungle and a lush green gardng by a Balinese artist named Dewa covers the entire main wall and lends a feeling of sitting in an overgrown jungle. The Timor pandok (a wooden primitive bed) and the aboriginal decoration motifs from Borneo complete the room's primitive atmosphere.

Cinnabar Tearoom

There is a main bedroom with a double bed and a tearoom with a double futon. The two traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e paintings of a landscape and a Japanese geisha are more than one hundred years old. Lacquer-ware from Japan and China is displayed in a cabinet. In addition to tatamis, a black mattress is provided for comfort. A Japanese Zen garden of fine stones separates the room and bath, which is fenced by black bamboo and features a big round wooden bathtub. The porch floor is from a wall of teak wood from an old Javanese house which the owner tore down for renovation. The faded scratches and marks on the wood further enhance the shabby chic decor of a classical Japanese room.

Indian Pasha Room

The lordly presentation of an Indian Pasha is represented by the velvet-covered double platform bed. Large velvet pillows with silver tassels manifest the essence of decadent Indian luxury. A painting in an ornate wooden frame, depicts the thriving era of the Indian Mogul dynasty. It was painted by the Dutch traveler Vanden Grooten in the 18th century and later etched for publishing. A day bed scattered with embroidered classical Indian pillows is placed on the porch. With the cool wind blowing from the jungle, one could easily fall into a serene sleep and forget space and time.

Batavia Dacha Cottage

Batavia was the name of Jakarta during the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia. The room design is based on colonial Javanese style. The centerpiece is an eighty-year-old solid brass bed with a white cloth drape streaming from a corona bed decoration above like a princess crown. Romantic ambience permeates every corner of the room. Rose gardens blossom on two sides by the porch. The sidewall extending to two glass windows under the sidewall gable gives the feeling of the high ceiling in a chapel. The name Batavia Princess depicts the room well.

Rembulan Demeure

Rembulan Room ----- the moon dances ----- sitting atop a traditional Balinese family compound, overlooking a courtyard full of colorful Balinese flowers and a tranquil lush green tropical ravine. The luxury of space sets you in the mood to abscond for inactivity or rewind after a long day of expedition. There are also privacy bamboo curtains at your own veranda. (Two double beds can be arranged in this room to accommodate four guests.)

The Gua "Cave" Room is perched high over the ravine and is the most spacious guest room at Matahari. Dramatic perspectives on the ravine are seen from windows along two walls. This room offers exceptional privacy and quietude, being located on the side of the ravine and accessed by one flight of stairs from above. Families will enjoy the large space, while individuals and couples can be incognito here as if in a sacred and lush Balinese place of meditaion.

One of our newly built guestrooms located down two flights of stairs, Jupiter offers a sense of privacy with a terrace overlooking a traditional Balinese courtyard. The headboard with Indonesian wood carving elements echoes the mystic ambience of Balinese living. Situated in the lower garden, Jupiter also brings you tranquility in the midst of all the festivities Ubud has to offer. (Two double beds can be arranged in this room to accommodate 4 guests.)

Unlike other Indonesians, Balinese people mainly believe in Hindu Dharma. Touring the island, you will encounter the characteristic brilliant smiles, which signal the attitude of the Balinese people. Ubud, a colony of art and culture, is one of the most traditional areas in Bali. The people of Ubud dress in their native sarongs and maintain traditional religious ceremonies. Walking on the streets of Ubud, you might have the illusion of wandering through an ancient city.

Matahari Cottage Bed & Breakfast is situated on a secluded ravine, only a five to seven minute walk from Ubud Palace. Numerous birds and butterflies weave through the surrounding lush green jungle and garden of colorful, exotic flowers. Flocks of white herons fly in a V formation as the glowing Balinese sun sets. The birds are on their way to their native habitat, the village of Bedulu, located a fifteen-minute drive from Ubud. Bedulu is a popular spot for tourists.

An occasional guest familiar only with chain hotel offerings might find that Matahari does not match his or her expectations; however, those who would enjoy a more natural ethnic experience in grass huts carefully prepared to make guests feel pampered in the jungle surroundings, will find a pleasurable and memorable experience at Matahari, and at a reasonable price.

Matahari is a green bungalow, which means that ceiling and floor fans are used in place of air conditioning in all guest rooms (the Indian Pasha Room is the only guest room with air-conditioner.) Air conditioning is used only in the library where numerous antique books and furniture require protection from excess humidity. Matahari's solar water heater, imported from Australia, accommodates hot baths and showers while saving electric energy. Although Bali is located only eight degree south of the equator, Ubud is located near the mountainous area where temperatures vary as much as 5 degrees Celsius between nighttime and daytime hours.
