Johor ~ The Southern Gateway to Malaysia

The state of Johor is located in the southern most point of Peninsular Malaysia, as well as at the southern-most tip of mainland Asia. Hence it is the southern gateway to Malaysia. Johor is the only state in Malaysia with East and West coast. The state is flanked by South China Sea on the east and Straits of Melaka on the west. The east coast boasts of natural beauties in scenic beaches and pristine islands, while the west is rapidly developing into an economic hub.

History

Johor was founded in early 16th century by Sultan Mahmud Shah, son of the last Sultan of Melaka. During its peak, the Johor Empire extended its reign to the Riau Archipelago. In 1885, when Sultan Abu Bakar became the Sultan, His Royal Highness transformed Johor from a plain fishing village into a developing and thriving town. Sultan Abu Bakar, which is now fondly remembered as the Father of Modern Johor, also developed other districts in Johor.

In 1914, the British appointed an advisor to counsel the Sultan of Johor over matters of the state. This continued until the Japanese invaded Malaya in 1945 during the Second World War. After the war, Johor joined the federation of Malaya, which later gained independence from the British in 1957.

Tourism Icons in Johor

Sultan Ibrahim Building, Johor Bahru

You can spot Sultan Ibrahim Building, which is a blend of Malay and Colonial architecture, standing majestically on Bukit Timbalan in Johor Bahru. This iconic landmark in the state capital has a colorful past, and had witnessed the changes of times and history. Sultan Ibrahim Building was a fortress, a command centre and is now a state government building. Its history spans back to the late 1930’s when it was officially opened by Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar. However not long after that in 1942, it was occupied by the Japanese during the Second World War. In the battle of Singapore during Second World War, the Japanese utilized this building as an operations centre, where they strategized and carried out assaults on Singapore. Today, you can still see the ruins in the Sultan Ibrahim Building, which was partly damaged in the war.

Royal Abu Bakar Museum, Johor Bahru

His Royal Highness Sultan Abu Bakar, the 21st ruler of Johor, commissioned the building of Grand Palace of Johor (Istana Besar Johor). The palace boasts of renaissance design and architecture, and was completed in 1866 by local labors under the direction of an architect from Europe. Once completed, Sultan Abu Bakar furnished his grand abode with items purchased from England. In 1982, the palace was converted into the Royal Abu Bakar Museum. With photos of the royal family, silverware, gifts and artifacts on display, you can relive the history of Johor by visiting Royal Abu Bakar Museum. Interestingly, the palace converted museum is still holds official functions and ceremonies.
